Jelly Fish : Things you might don't know about this creature

Jelly fish, a mysterious creature about which most folks don't know about. Therefore here are some simple and carefully figured explanations about this creature.
A jelly fish is an aquatic creature which live most of it's life in the oceans. As long it's an ocean body, jelly fishes can be found in different temperature, ie in both hot and cold temperatures. As far the research says, jelly fish has been around living on this planet for about millions of years. In fact they are living on the planet earth before the triassic and jurrassic period which means even before the dinosaurs arrived.

Scyphozoa(Jellyfish)

Overview
Jellyfish can be around 0.5 mm to 2 m (7 ft) in size comprising a weight of around 2 kg to around 220 kg. With these variations in weight and sizes they can achieve the top speed of around 8 km per hour. The body composition of a jelly fish is very simple as it's 95% of the body is made up of water. It lacks a brain, a heart and bones in it's body. It's body is mainly made up of three layers:
  • An outer layer called epidermis.
  • A middle layer which is made up of thick elastic substance called mesoglea.
  • And inner layer called gastrodermis.
Nervous system or nerve net allow it's body to smell, react to light and respond to other stimuli. Also, the digestive system of a jelly fish is not very complex, rather it is quite simple just like it's body structure. The digestive cavity of a jelly fish acts both it's stomach and intestine, with an opening for both the mouth and anus. They mainly eat underwater plant life, fish eggs, small shrimps, crabs and small fishes. But some of the species of jelly fish also tend to eat other jelly fish as well.

Jelly fish can be deadly as their tentacles generally (not all species) comprises of venomous stings which releases neurotoxic peptides as venom. Some jelly fish also uses hemotoxic venom. The effect of venom and intensity can vary from different species of  jellyfish. Mostly jelly fish sting results in minor pain or discomfort in skin.

FACTS:
  • Some species of jelly fish can be so deadly that can be placed along side the most dangerous creatures on the planet earth. For example, the Sea wasp box jelly fish is the most the most dangerous jellyfish. It is also known as the "The marine stinger".
  • A specie of jelly fish, Turritopsis dohrnii, also known as the "Immortal jelly fish" is capable of living forever through the process of cellular transdifferentiation, a process in which an organism's cell essentially become new again.
  • A group of jelly fish can be three different name which are: "blooms", "swarms" and "smack".
  • Various species of jelly fish went to space when NASA first started sending jellyfish to space abroad the colombia space shuttle back in early 90s to test the affect of zero gravity on them.
  • Some species of jelly fish can glow in the dark.
  • Not all  species of jelly fish have tentacles. For example, the crystal jelly fish do not have any tentacles. Instead, it has hair like structure as a substitute for tentacles.
  • Jelly fish can clone themselves for the purpose of reproduction or in case of any injury.
  • There are around 2000 species of jelly fish which are discoverd out of which around 70 are dangerous and around 25 of them are edible. According to scientists, there could be 300000 different species of jelly fish yet to be discovered.
  • And at last, the jelly fish are not fish !, even though their name comprises of the word "fish" in them, they are in fact aren't fishes. It is because fishes are vertebrates and breathe through gills underwater whereas jelly fish are invertebrates which absorb from water under through membrane. ❔🐠❕
