Dendroaspis polylepis (Black Mamba)
General Info
These snakes were first introduced by a German born British zoologist Mr. Albert GΓΌnther in 1864. Black mambas are generally found in the parts of African continent like Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Cango, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Their name "Black mamba" is based on their black interior of the inside of their mouth. These snakes use neurotoxic venom to kill their prey or for self defense, which can easily kill a human under 10 minutes if proper aid and anti-venom is not provided. They live both on the ground as well as on the trees of the tropical forests. Like majority of the reptiles, they are cold blooded and have agile bodies through which they can attain a speed up to 16 Kmph to 21.5 Kmph (~ 10 to 12.5 miles per hour).
Physical Characteristics
Black mamba is a cold blooded reptile like any other snake with a coffin-shaped head and black mouth color in the interior of it's mouth as it's main highlighting body feature. It is the 2nd longest snake in the world (the 1st being the King Cobra). As far it's size description goes, an adult black mamba can usually grow between 8.2 feet to 9.1 feet (~ 2.5 to 2.7 meters) in length but some specimens were recorded to grow up to lengths between 14 feet to 14.9 feet (4.26 to 4.54 meters ). Their average weight is around 1.6 Kg (3.52 pounds) and can vary between 0.52 Kg to 2.4 Kg (~ 1.14 to 5.29 pounds) depending upon the length ranging from 3.4 to 8.5 feet (~ 1.03 to 2.6 meters) respectively. Also they their fangs can grow up to 0.26 inches (6.5 mm).

Unlike their famous black colored mouth, their body color is rarely black. Generally they are of gunmetal (a shade of grey), khaki (a lighter shade of brown with yellowish tinge), olive, yellowish-brown and sometimes purplish shade in color. Young black mambas are of lighter shade if compared to their adult counterparts and grow darker in body color as they age. The lower part (belly) is generally of greyish-white in color. The color of the pupil varies from shades of brownish-grey to black surrounded by yellow or silvery white or yellow color
Behavior and lifestyle
Black mamba's are usually quite shy and consider to escape most of the time to the bushes or holes nearby, but they can also be very aggressive and will definitely attack if they are spooked or disturbed. That's why they have been blamed for numerous deaths of people every year, specially in rural areas because rural areas have no or very limited number of antidotes available there. When cornered, they get into a defensive stance where they stand their body erect and broaden their neck and fangs in order to react to every attack or movement rapidly.
They are stealthy predators and generally prey small warm blooded animals like birds, rodents, bats etc., but they can also consume other snakes. Unlike most of the venomous snakes which hunt their prey by biting and holding the prey until the their prey eventually dies, black mamba's approach is a little different. They bite their prey and inject them with their venom and doesn't even try to strangle or chase it's prey. Instead, they wait for their prey to get paralyzed, after that they simply follow the trail of their prey with the help of their keen sense of smell and ultimately locates it's prey which is already dead. Their digestive system allows them to fully digest the food in between 8 to 10 hours. Their lifespan is up to 11 years but can live longer if the conditions are suitable.
Reproduction
The mating for back mambas is anytime between September to February. During this season, the males are highly active and the looking for females signals. The female signals the male in order to show that they are ready for mating by staying still and lifting it's tail above the ground. More than one male generally show up in the female territory for mating. The males fight each other to til one of them is dead or unconscious. After that that dominant male mates with the female which lasts up to more than 2 hours. After mating, the male leaves the territory.
The gestation period is of around 90 days. The females generally lay 6 to 17 eggs but can also lay up to 25 to 27 eggs. It take around 6 months before the eggs are hatched. The young babies born are equally dangerous like the adults and are capable enough to kill a human. Also, if spooked, they become much more reckless than the adults and releases the maximum amount of venom their glands can release. One year after the birth, they can attain a length of around 6.7 feet (2 meter) and look almost like the adults in terms of body size (although differentiable by light color).
